Monday Art/Journal Prompt

Wow, it is already December! We are down to the last few weeks of 2012. We’ll be doing something different in 2013 for this Monday prompt. So stay tuned!

This week’s Art/Journal prompt is about using stitching in your journals. Most of us probably work in paper product journals. We tend to think in terms of paint, pens, pencils, markers, and glue for paper journals. But I know that you can add all kinds of fun texture and interest by adding stitching to those pages. Stitching isn’t just for fabric you know!

In this photo you can see that there is machine stitching added to the paper page. If you have thin pages, then glue a couple of pages together for added support. If you have thicker pages, just run it through your machine (set the stitch width much wider for paper or you will just create a perforation instead). You can also do stitching by hand if you like, which is especially useful in those hard to reach parts of the page, or for couching down heavier fibers.

By adding stitching, you can now add more layers and dimension and texture without adding bulky and sticky glue products. Just think of all the fun stuff you could add by using thread instead of glue! Plus loose threads and ribbons look fun on a journal page. I encourage you to go ahead and sew something to your paper pages in your journal.

Have fun!

  1. Your Art journal is very pretty. I love the bright colors. Never thought machine or hand stitching a page in a journal.
